The first day back for Drake, Jake, Crystal, and Sean was met with excited chatter and applause from their classmates. Their fellow fifth graders swarmed around them as they attempted to step into the classroom, the four friends finding it difficult to squeeze past the excited ten- and eleven-year-olds who had circled around them, lobbing a barrage of questions at them that came so quickly that neither Drake, Jake, Crystal, or Sean were able to keep up or could even manage to answer even a single question. They pondered if this must be how it feels to be a celebrity. In that moment, they were certainly celebrities in their class. Raising her head from the arum mass of coins, she inventoried her tremendous collection as it spilled from her massive, horned skull. The accumulation of almost a thousand years, her hoard covered the cavern’s floor, filling the smaller chambers and spilling into her personal apartment where it was deepest. It had been long since the red dragon had felt any kind of hunger at all. A grand wyrm of her power and size consumed mana from the earth itself and when she did eat, almost nothing went to waste. She needed no one and nothing - save the earth itself. Thanks to her great flames and powerful magic, nothing grew or lived for hundreds of miles around her barren mountains. No living thing had any reason to traverse those lands; all its mana fed only her, and

1. No nodding or headshaking if the characters are going to say “yes” or “no” anyway. 2. Use the active voice whenever possible. 3. Avoid “to be” verbs when you can. 4. Don’t overdo the adjectives, especially with dialogue tags. 5. Don’t describe a character’s appearance as if you're filling out a police report. 6. Your story description or summary should not be a story all its own.
